Celebrity Mile, road races dominate weekend running scene

The second annual DMSE Sports Classic was held Saturday with runners able to participate in a 5-K, or a 10-K, or a half-marathon on Sunday.

The popular "Celebrity Mile" more than lived up to its name with many local, and area, dignitaries and celebrities participating on Saturday.

“The idea is to have it be a weekend festival, where you can come and run,” local race director Dave McGillivray said. “There are three major events, you can do just the 5K, just the 10K, or just the half, or you can do two or all three. There’s something there to challenge anyone and everyone.”

Celebrities included Max Lane, former New England Patriots offensive lineman; Karen Smyers, Ironman Triathlon world champion; Becca Pizzi, World Marathon Challenge champion; and NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, Boston Police Commissioner Bill Evans, Boston Marathon bombing survivors, members of the Martin Richard family, and Boston TV and media members.

The race was held on the campus of Merrimack College, which is McGillivray's alma mater.
