MEET DAVE MCGILLIVRAY OF DMSE SPORTS

BOSTON VOYAGER

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Dave McGillivray.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Dave. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 1978, I ran across America from Medford, OR to Medford, MA and finished in Fenway Park. After that, I opening a running store in my hometown of Medford, MA. Then, I started putting on events to promote the store and decided this was my passion so I decided to open an event management company. This was 38 years ago. Since then we have produced or consulted on over 1,000 events all over the US and worldwide from World Championship events to the Olympic Marathon Trials. Currently, we assist with all the operational areas of the Boston Marathon. I serve as the event’s Race Director and have been involved for 30 years…

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not sure it has been smooth every step of the way but it has been very rewarding and fulfilling. Struggles are usually in the area of sponsorship acquisition, securing permits and recruiting participants. However, in looking at the big picture, it has been a very successful journey and one that I fully expect to continue to grow and expand with each passing year.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with DMSE Sports – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We primarily focus on race management, that is, all the operational aspects of event productions. We have made a conscientious decision to try to be the very best in one area of producing mass-participatory events versus spreading ourselves too thin and trying to tackle all the various disciplines we could attempt to handle.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
At the moment, steady as she goes…don’t anticipate any major changes in the near future. Business is brisk and the staff seems content although challenged on a day-to-day basis to keep the pace. Of course, we will always entertain other opportunities if they present themselves to us. Our bandwidth can always expand if it makes sense to go in that direction.
