A RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS
HOP NEWS
by Dave McGillivray
Yesterday, my son Luke and daughter Elle and I went to Staples to pick up some at home school supplies. As we were waiting in line, an older gentleman was at the counter finalizing a purchase. I didn’t notice but Luke did that he was on crutches. He purchased what seemed like a big, heavy box of paper.
Obviously, being on crutches he wasn’t going to be able to carry the box out to his car on his own. My kids just noticed this on their own and immediately blurted out, “sir, can we help you carry that box out to your car?” Whoa...I almost fell on the floor.
The gentleman smiled and said, “well, kids, that’s very kind of you...and yes!”
So, Luke and Elle carried the heavy box together out the door and to the man’s car, while I waited in line. I know, what a slug I am in not doing it myself but it all just caught me off guard and I was just beaming with pride at seeing this “act of kindness” my kids were displaying.
I got up to the register and the cashier said, “Wow, you must be so proud of your children, not every kid would have thought and offered to do that.” I was speechless. When my kids came back into the store, I wanted to give them both a big hug but didn’t want to “embarrass” them in front the other customers. When we got into the car, I made it clear to them that what they did was very special and very kind. Although we ALL are going through a most difficult time right now, it’s these relatively simple acts of kindness that mean so much and can help you get through the rough times.
I’m so proud of my children.
