Yesterday, my son Luke and daughter Elle and I went to Staples to pick up some at home school supplies. As we were waiting in line, an older gentleman was at the counter finalizing a purchase. I didn’t notice but Luke did that he was on crutches. He purchased what seemed like a big, heavy box of paper.

On August 29th, 1978 Boston Marathon Race Director, Dave McGillivray ran into Fenway Park in front of over 30, 000 cheering Red Sox fans as he finished an epic run across America. The lap around Fenway was the final leg of McGillivray’s 3,452-mile cross country run to raise money for the Jimmy Fund.

Over the last seven years, BES Librarian Diana Colby and her husband have been to the Boston Marathon five times. She said her husband loves running and has qualified for the Boston Marathon every year since 2012. However, in 2014 he was "squeaked" out because the number of runners who wanted to run was greater than the slots available so he did not get to run. After that, he helped start a Facebook group called the “Boston Squeakers” for individuals who are on the line and risk not getting accepted in spite of having a qualifying time.

On May 31, Medford High School alum and Race Director of the Boston Marathon Dave McGillivray spoke at the McGlynn Elementary and Middle School about his new book, “Dream Big: A Story of Courage and Determination.” McGillivray not only organizes the Boston Marathon and many other road races, but he is also a motivational speaker, having delivered over 1,900 speeches to all age groups worldwide.

The first marathon, in Novo, Antartica, was tough. The second and the third were the same. But by the fourth and fifth, Dave McGillivray’s fatigue was fading and his legs felt firmer beneath him. And in Miami, running his seventh marathon on seven continents in seven days, he felt so good the only thing stopping the 63-year-old from going for eight was that he’d run out of continents.
